Where are we in Tasmania? |
GENERAL Mathom Farm is situated in NW Tasmania 20km inland from Ulverstone and roughly midway between Burnie and Devonport. Travelling time from either Devonport Airport or the ferry terminal is approximately 35 mins. The drive from Burnie Airport (actually at Wynyard) takes about 45 mins. SPECIFIC The farm lies on the Leven River in the locality of Gunns Plains, 24km by road from the Bass Highway that runs from Launceston to Smithton. SETTING Mathom Farm has almost 2km of river frontage on the Leven River. The river is home to trout, blackfish, freshwater lobsters and platypus. There is also 10 ha of rain forest on the property. Close to the farm is virgin bush with walking tracks, waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cradle Mountain Range forms a backdrop to the property.

If travelling from Devonport Airport or the ferry terminal, take the SECOND turnoff from Bass Highway to Ulverstone (get into the right lane at the first turnoff.). Follow the B17 through Gawler and North Motton and about 2km after North Motton turn right for Gunns Plains. After entering the 'Plains, turn right after the store following the signs for Penguin. After crossing the Leven River, turn left at the road junction and 1857 (the Dairy House) is 2km on your right. You will see the "Mathom Farm" sign and the dairy and silo. Mathom Farm Cottage is a further 850 m, however call into 1857 first to meet us and pick up the keys. If travelling from Wynyard (Burnie Airport) follow the Bass Highway east to Penguin. Take the first turnoff and follow the signs on the B17 for Riana, South Riana (where you will turn left), and eventually, after another left turn, Gunns Plains. This is a narrow, hilly and twisting road, so take great care. As you descend the last long hill and pass the "GUNNS PLAINS" sign, you will see the Leven River before you. The paddocks nestled within the meander of the river at the foot of the hill are Mathom Farm's. At the T junction turn left and proceed past Mathom Farm Cottage. A further 850m will bring you to 1857, the Dairy House, on your left. |
